Possible Chimney Fire

In the early morning hours of January 18, Blacksburg Fire and Rescue responded for the report of a flue fire in a neighborhood near the town limits. Units arrived to find nothing showing. Engine 10′s crew laddered the structure and investigated, finding no sign of active fire. Chief Bolte (101), Assistant Chief Carner (102), and Engine 7 also responded to this incident.

Back from Break

The live-ins are back from break and have responded to several minor incidents during the past week, mainly fire alarm activations. Remember to add water to Easy-Mac before you microwave it!

Lester

Lester Karlin is the honorary fourth live-in member. He graduated Virginia Tech in 1973 and hasn’t left Blacksburg since. Lester is the equipment manager for the VT football team and lives less than a mile from Station 3. He responds on nearly every call and ensures that Engine 10 gets on the road. Any future live-in is sure to meet our dedicated driver.

Spring Has Arrived!

Spring has arrived in Blacksburg and of course with the good weather comes dumpster fires. Saturday night started with a fire alarm on campus, E-10 then responded downtown for a street light on fire, finally we responded uptown for a dumpster fire. We hope you enjoy the musical stylings of Billy Joel.

Engine 10 Responds to Structure Fire

Just before midnight on April 1 Blacksburg Fire and Blacksburg Rescue were dispatched to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park for the report of a structure fire. Engine 10 responded and learned while en-route that it was a shed next to a trailer. Engine 10 arrived, stretched an 1 3/4″ handline, extinguished the fire, and protected exposures. Engines 9 and 7 along with Tanker 6 also responded.

Hose Complement: 2 – 150′ 1 1/2″ crosslay; 2 – 200′ 1 3/4″ attack line; 2000′ 3″ supply line, 5″ supply line.
Duties: 1st run on all calls
Other: 6 man cab, Portable hydraulic pump, TNT combination tool

Engine 10 Responds to Structure Collapse

On February 13th Blacksburg Fire and Blacksburg Rescue were dispatched to Blacksburg High School for the report of a structure collapse with possible entrapment. Assistant Chief Carner (102) arrived on scene and established command. He alerted arriving units that everyone was in fact out of the structure. Fire units controlled utilities and assisted engineers. Blacksburg Fire was on scene for over 24 hours.
