Blacksburg Fire Department’s live-in program began in the fall of 2009 with a group of three student firefighters. The goal of the program was to provide an opportunity for Virginia Tech students who had been volunteers at their respective hometown departments to serve while gaining higher education. Live-ins run regular night and evening duty shifts to provide timely responses to incidents in the Town of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, and Virginia Tech’s campus. Members also take part in regular department training and assist with pre-planning, fire prevention, department maintenance, and many other tasks as assigned. Currently there are six members of the program all coming from different backgrounds and having different areas of study that live in two houses directly next-door to BFD Station 3. Anyone interested in learning more about the live-in program and the requirements that go along with it may contact the chief of the department, Keith Bolte at kbolte@blacksburg.gov.
